FAQs about Borrowing Materials

How do I get a library card?

You must live, attend school, pay taxes, own property or work in Yazoo County. You must provide proof of address and proof of identity. You may do this with a current picture ID (examples include a driver’s license or a state issued identification card). If the address on your picture ID is not accurate, you may prove residency by showing your picture ID along with any of the following items: mail sent to your current physical address, bill, bank statement, voter’s registration card, lease, pay stub and/or car registration.

Children and young adults ages 17 or younger must have a parent or legal guardian complete and sign the application form. The parent or legal guardian must have a library card in good standing. The parent or legal guardian vouches for residency and assumes all responsibility for the items checked out on the minor’s library card.

Non-residents who do not meet these qualifications may pay a yearly non-resident fee of $10.00 to obtain a library card. Alternatively, non-residents may join the Yazoo Library Association and the non-resident fee will be waived.

You must present your library card in order to check out items. If you misplace your library card, you may use a picture ID to check out items twice in one year. After that, you must purchase a replacement card ($2.00).  Stolen cards are replaced free of charge if a police record reporting the theft is shown to a library staff person, or if you are a YLA member. You are responsible for reporting lost or stolen library cards to the library staff.

Please note: You are responsible for the items checked out on your library card. Parents or legal guardians are responsible for items checked out on the cards of their dependents (ages 17 or younger).

How many items can I borrow?

You may check out up to 5 books, 5 audio-books and 5 movies.* The loan period for books and audio-books is 14 days, while the loan period for movies is 7 days.

YLA members may check out up to 10 books, 10 audio-books, and/or 5 movies.* The loan period for books and audio-books is 21 days, while the loan period for movies is 7 days. (Click here for more information on YLA Membership.)

Only adults (18 and over) may check out movies.

All patrons may check out up to 10 honor system items or magazines for 14 days. Magazines from the current month do not circulate, but patrons are welcome to view them in our seating areas.

Fines

Overdue books, audio-books and movies are $.20 per day and borrowing privileges are suspended when fines and/or fees reach $5.00.

The maximum amount of fines per item is $10.00.

You may elect to pay only a portion of your fines or fees.

If an item is 6 months or more past due, the price of the item will be charged to your account. If the item is returned undamaged, you will only be liable for the maximum amount of fines ($10.00 per item).
